Simon Eastlake, Developments Director at Office Space in Town:

You might be one of the lucky few who has a great job with a short and easy commute to work, but rising house prices in our major cities, where most of the career opportunities are based, mean that the vast majority of us have lengthy, expensive and often complex commutes into work. This can not only impact your productivity once you get to work, but also your general health and wellbeing.

According to the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) Labour Force Survey, people are spending more time travelling to and from work than ever before: in 2014 the average daily commuting time was 62 minutes – that’s more than ten hours a week!

The ONS survey also reveals that the longer your commute, the lower your feelings of happiness, life satisfaction and the sense that your activities are worthwhile, and also the higher your anxiety compared with non-commuters.

As Developments Director at Office Space in Town, my role is to source the buildings we buy for our flexible workspaces and ensure that we fit them out to suit not only how we work today, but how we need to work in the future. We continually hear from both our prospective and current clients about what they look for in terms of proximity to transport hubs and the need to provide facilities such as cycle storage and showers and now we’d like to hear your views directly on the impact that commuting is having on you, your productivity, health and general wellbeing.

So, please help us to understand how we might be able to help shape your workplace of the future – the survey takes just a few minutes to complete and you could also enter our prize draw to win a John Lewis voucher worth £200!

We would love to hear your views. Please take our survey now.
